Visit to Haematology unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham
The riders visited Queen Elizabeth Hospital recently to meet Professor Charlie Craddock and his team along with a rather special visit to the ward to meet some of the patients being treated. I admit to being a little nervous since meeting patients with cancer is not expected to be a positive experience, after all, these are people who are suffering from what used to be thought of as a near-terminal illness. It was with great joy, however, that we met patients who were full of hope, despite the fact they were coping with the physical and emotional pain that such an illness imposes. Clearly many of the treatments are working, many patient lives are being saved that perviously couldn’t have been saved and this is directly down to the methods of placing patients on new drug trials before they’re availbale via the usual healthcare network.
Nursing care is imperative to getting patients through the system and the more nurses the more trials that can take place and therefore the more lives that can potentially be saved. We are cycling every stage of the 2015 Le Tour One Day Ahead in order to raise money for more nurses to carry out these trials. Please continue to support by sponsoring me on the link above.
Below is a photo of one of my fellow riders Doug McKinnon meeting Ray who has a been a patient of the clinic twice now and hopefully is in remission permanently! What an honour to hear from the patients themselves about the work being carried out and the support that the Cure Leukaemia charity provides to the Haematology unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Hope is what we’re riding for and hope is certainly what we experienced at the hospital on our visit.
