It Begins !
Day 1 in the heat and we finally started Le Tour One Day Ahead in Utrecht. Quite amazing to see so many people here for Le Tour which begins with the profesisonals who are beginning their time trail prologue tomorrow. By that time we will be well on our way from Utrecht to Zelande via Gouda, Rotterdam and the lovely islands of south Holland. I remember these beautiful routes from the IBC2IBC (London to Amsterdam) with my good friends from the broadcast industry. Such beautiful countryside.
Today, however, was about getting the team together, cycling the route of the prologue time trial and getting the legs moving. Crowds packed Utrecht, many in yellow, the streets are decked with the yellow, polka-dot, green and white colours of the Tour de France individual competitions within the bigger race. Many were taking photos of us as if we were professionals out on a warm up before the real thing and it was fantastic to see the dutch entertaining themselves at the many bars and cheering us on even if they were slightly inebriated!
Tomorrow the fun begins. Setting off early will help with the anticipated heat. Getting into our stride for the first of many 120mile days – that when the task we’ve undertaken will truly begin hit home and if today was emotional tomorrow will be even more so. Knowing that we are beginning something special for a team of haematologists and nurses and patients who are, in reality, much more special, is very rewarding. I truly hope we can meet our targets in fundraising and I would like to thank everyone for their contribution to making this happen.
It’s quite simple; it saves lives; that’s what this journey is about; simple.
