Do you think this is taking health and safety in training a bit too far?
After many hours on the WattBike I found myself one day getting quite sleepy as I listened to mind numbing audio books which would normally be interesting but with fatique setting in started too put me to sleep. So I thought I’d take some precautions.
Many people don’t think it’s possible to fall asleep on a real road bike but I assure you it is. In 2003 I started TheRaceAgainstTime to cycle Lands End to John O’Groats in just 5 days. Yes, that’s nearly 200 miles per day.
Early on day 4, heading up over Beef Tub Summit just north of Moffat in the borders of Scotland I was so absolutely exhausted I found myself drifting. I was drifting into the gutter at the side of the road and continually saying to myself “don’t fall into the ditch” but you’ve guessed it, I did not off and yes did end up in the ditch !
So I’m not taking any chances on the long and arduous WattBike training sessions – helmet on !
